Do you think that Australia has too many politicians?

A number of us do and we intend to do something about it.

Originally Australia was made up of a number of different colonies, almost like a group of separate countries.  Each of these had a need for its own local and central government.

The advantages of combining these colonies were realized.  However, there was no way that the colonial central governments would hand over all of their powers to a new national government.  Thus, in 1901, a new federal government was created and the colonies became states.

We now had three levels of government in this country: local, state and federal.  Some of the powers of the old colonial central governments were handed over to the new federal body but, surprisingly, there does not appear to have been a rush for state politicians to reduce their numbers accordingly.

At the time of federation, because of Australia’s vast size, there was some justification in retaining state governments to maintain contact with the people. However communications have improved dramatically since 1901 and we now see no need for state governments.

We feel that this country would be much better off, both now and in the future, if all state matters were made the responsibility of the federal government.  We do not wish to get rid of the states, just their politicians.

Not only would this make a large amount of extra money available for such things as health and education, it would stop state and federal politicians avoiding responsibility by blaming each other for all of our problems.

Imagine the benefits to this country if just one government was responsible for ensuring that all Australians received their fair share of our scarce water resources! It is even conceivable that our ailing health system could be fixed.

We need your help to encourage state politicians to retire and we would invite you to join our action group.
